Please notify her as soon as possible, so you can receive your registration package early.

WHAT IS THE PRE-CONFERENCE?
FIt is an opportunity at the CDSS Annual Conference for representatives of local parent groups across Canada to: - meet and discuss common issues, problem solve, share ideas and resources - celebrate the fabulous things that are accomplished by CDSS Member Groups across the country - connect with your peers - other group leaders - learn more about group leadership

2004 THEME: PEER SUPPORT
When surveyed last year, almost all groups indicated that connecting with and supporting new parents when their babies are born is a fundamental element of the group's mandate. However, only 2 of 23 groups indicated that they train these volunteers. There is significant evidence in the self-help and social work literature that emphasises the benefits of providing training for volunteers who take on this role. We know what characteristics to look for when recruiting peer-support volunteers, what detracts from making solid connections with new families, how best to increase the credibility of your program in the community and most importantly, what not to do! Is your support to new families the very best it could be? We will cover the elements of a training program, where to find leadership in your community, resources already available and the many benefits from taking this step.

BENEFITS:
What are the benefits of the workshops? - a stronger sense of connection with other group leaders from across Canada. We can often feel isolated in leadership roles in our communities. While we are helping others, who is supporting us? - fresh ideas, new resources and a rejuvenation that comes from interacting with others facing similar challenges - a network of folks to connect with after the workshop through emails, exchanges and the new CDSS Group Leaders' Online Forum (more about that soon!) - an opportunity to share concerns with CDSS staff

DETAILS:
The pre-conference workshop runs Thursday, May 20 from 9am to 4 pm. The "More than Meets the Eye" program begins at 7:pm with the Welcome Celebration and we will be ready to kick back! (Note that this means you will have to book your travel to arrive Wednesday, May 19.) The registration fee of $40 covers the cost of refreshments, lunch, and extensive handouts. Please note that child care is not available during this workshop. If this is a concern, please let me know.

WHAT TO BRING
Make a note to bring samples of your new parent packages, brochures, posters, newsletters - anything that you want to show off and share with other groups for our national "Show and Tell" session! Think about what your group does best, what isn't working and what you would like to do next. Also, think about ways you see Member Groups and CDSS working together to accomplish common goals.

SENDING A REPRESENTATIVE FROM YOUR GROUP
If your group sponsors members to attend the annual conference, please invite them to attend the pre-conference workshop and share this informationwhen they return. There are many creative ways to tackle funding this venture. One group has successfully collected airmiles donations from local businesses to send their delegate. Consider approaching local service agencies like the Kinsmen or Lions and invite them to sponsor your travel, stressing how bringing home the valuable information gathered will make a difference for children in your community. If anyone would like ideas or help with such initiatives, just ask! Think of the energy we could generate if each CDSS Member Group had a voice at the table!

Any questions - just ask. I am available on the toll free line at 1 800 883-5608 (8:30 - 4:30 MST Monday to Friday) or send an email to lin@cdss.ca. I am very interested in hearing any ideas or suggestions to incorporate into the day.
